The Artist

I may have been drawn to pencil art by an incident during the Great Depression of the 1930's. Many people were so poor at that time that they did anything they could just to keep eating. One day a man came to our door and asked if he might draw a portrait of my sister and me for a meal. He drew a pencil portrait of our faces as we played. I have the picture today, and it is still a beautiful work of art. And to think, all he wanted for the little masterpiece was a meal.

Pencil art has a long life. There are drawings done by Michaelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci that are still in good condition today. Pencils are what we all know and use, and that's what I do, pencil art.

I have long admired Mother Teresa, and when I read a quote from her, "I am like a little pencil in His hands," I felt called upon to pick up my pencils and draw her picture.

I am inspired by Mother Teresa's dedication to helping those in need. A part of me wishes I could do as she did. I can't, but I can draw her with love and admiration.
