Mother Teresa

as excerpted from "The Importance of Mother Teresa" by Rafael Tilton

Childhood

When Agnes Gonxha (Gohn-ja) Bohaxhiu (Boy-ya-jee-oo) was growing up in Skopje, her family life was happy. Her family was Albanian, and Catholic. Her father and mother believed in helping those less fortunate than themselves, and Agnes learned, from them and from her parish priest, the joy of helping others. From the age of 12, she wanted to dedicate her life to being a missionary. At age 18, upon finding out that the Sisters of Our Lady of Loreto served as missionaries in India, she petitioned to join them.

The Sisters of Loreto

Agnes had to travel to Rathfarnham, Ireland to Join the Sisters of our Lady of Loreto . She learned English there, then she was sent to India, north of Calcutta where she taught in a slum school, and trained for school administration.

After six years, she took her final vows and came to be called "Mother". She now began her life within the cloistered community of Loreto Entally. She was allowed to be in touch with her family by letter, but had no contact with the outside world. However, her students, the daughters of India's ranking families, kept her in touch through their work as volunteers in the slums of the city.

World War II

After World War II, when the girls, who were her students, had nothing to eat, Mother Teresa went out into the streets to find food for them. She was not supposed to leave the walls of her community, but she went anyway. In the streets she saw the terrible suffering of the people.

Her experience outside the walls caused her to think about her life and what she wanted to do with it. She felt she was called by God to work with the poor people outside the walls and live among them.

Mother Teresa created the Missionaries of Charity finding willing workers among her former students. People who joined the Missionaries of Charity vowed to live in poverty, chastity, and obedience, but would not be enclosed behind walls. They would go out among the people.

Her Mission in Life

It became her mission in life to provide care and love for the needy people of India and later, the world; orphans, lepers, the dying. She provided clean beds, food and water, and loving hands to care for them. The loving care of the Missionaries of Charity reached out to people of all ages, races, and nationalities.

News of Mother Teresa's devotion and strength spread throughout the world. She used the publicity she received to help provide more and better care for the poor.

Inspiration and Love

Mother Teresa is an inspiration for all people, those in need of care and those who are able to give it.
